Hey there new blog platform! You looked lonely….
I had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Mardi Wareham for the April issue of Austin Monthly magazine. This was the first of a series of "Characters" I'll be making portraits of throughout the year for the magazine. Super excited about this project!
It was apparent to me from the time I spoke with Mardi over the phone about a week before the shoot that she is such a kind, thoughtful person who cares deeply about the well-being and spirit of those people she comes to meet. I mean, in said phone conversation, she wanted to make sure she'd have all of my coffee needs taken care of ahead of time for our early morning photo shoot. It was very clear that she has created the perfect business for her personality: singing telegrams. Yes, Mardi runs her own business delivering messages through song to people in homes and business all over the Austin area (her website is here)…in costume. Coming into peoples' lives and singing to them and cracking jokes is what she does, leaving the room happier than before she entered it.
Although there were so many wonderful options to choose from, we knew we had to use the chicken costume for the photo. Mardi, being the great sport that she is, gleefully donned the chicken costume and seemed completely unfazed by hanging out in the doorway of her home singing and dancing. Even when a few neighbors came by wondering what was going on she seemed perfectly cool explaining to them that she was being photographed for a magazine in her chicken suit.
To top everything off, this is the first time I have received baked goods from a model. Oh yes, "good morning! I have blueberry muffins for you!"….the clouds parted, angels sang, my stomach stopped growling. I even got a doggie bag. A+ Mardi, A+.
Please go out and pick up a copy of the April issue of Austin Monthly, and as you can see from the cover, plan out your Austin burger devouring schedule.
